Christine De Smedt

Since 2000 Christine has been working on her project 9x9 involving 91performers, - a core group of 9 dancers who engage 81 local participants from the different cities where the piece is performed. (The Austrian premiere of the project took place at the Viennese Tanzquartier in October 2002). 9x9 has a strong connection to local contexts and depicts fundamental phenomena of the construction of masses and crowds. It breaks with scale, composition, tradition and boundaries between art and life.

Choreographer and dancer, Christine de Smedt, who currently studies criminology in Leuwen, is leading several workshops in Belgium and abroad. As an artist, she is influenced by Min Tanaka, Elaine Summers and the Alexander technique. She is a member of the Ballets C. de la B. since 1990 and has developed the travel project Escape Velocity with the company in 1998. She worked four years with Meg Stuart as an interpreter and curator, especially for the improvisation project Crash Landing (Meg Stuart/Christine de Smedt/David Hernandez).
